& Information:
Choosing
the Right Level of Books:
Becoming
a fluent reader means reading a lot both at home and at school.
Even though we encourage them and give them time to read, they may
be "faking it". Often they pretend to read because the
books they have chosen are too difficult. "Just right"
books are books that interest them. They should not be so challenging
that they are more involved in figuring out the words than reading
the information and not too easy that they will not learn anything
new.
You
can tell if your child has chosen the right book by listening to him
or her read the first couple pages. Your child should:
- be able to read the text smoothly
- have difficulty with no more than 2 or 3 words on the first
2 pages
- be able to explain in his/her own words what he/she has read
- find the text interesting
